THE JOURNEY
One Vision. One Cup. A Movement.
The story of Filimon Tesfaselasae and how a curiosity became a culture.

CHAPTER ONE · THE BEGINNING
Not a Coffee Drinker. Not Yet.
Filimon Tesfaselasae did not grow up obsessed with coffee. Like many ambitious Ethiopian graduates, his eyes were set outward — scholarships, internships, a life beyond borders. It was through AIESEC, the global youth leadership network, that his first real opportunity arrived. A placement with a Turkish firm specializing in commercial coffee machine engineering changed everything.
"I didn't fall in love with coffee. Coffee found me — through machines, through science, through the smell of something I hadn't yet understood."
CHAPTER TWO · THE EDUCATION
He Learned the Machine Before He Learned the Cup.
In Turkey, Filimon immersed himself completely — studying the engineering, mechanics, and design philosophy behind commercial espresso equipment. He returned to Ethiopia not as a barista, but as a technician, a distributor, a connector of machines to the people who needed them. With each machine he sold, the science of extraction pulled him deeper. Then came the cupping sessions. Then came the revelation.
"When I tasted coffee the right way for the first time — measured, intentional, scientific — I realized Ethiopia had something the world was not yet fully seeing."

CHAPTER THREE · THE BUILD
He Built It Brick by Brick. Literally.
Filimon didn't hire a designer and walk away. He oversaw every detail of the first Fili Coffee location himself — the bricks on the floor, the placement of the grinders, the ventilation, the lighting. He envisioned a "social café" — not a transaction space but a living room for the city. Rustic wood, warm bulbs, rotating murals painted directly on the walls by local artists every three months. A roastery that fills the air. A Trust Corner library where books are borrowed on the honor system.

CHAPTER FOUR · THE SCALE
From One Cup to 106 Kitchens.
What began as a single location in Addis Ababa expanded with purpose. Laphto. Mexico. Tulu Dimtu. Each branch carried the same soul. The roasting operation grew to supply over 106 external restaurants and coffee houses with freshly roasted 100% Specialty Arabica beans. Filimon trained his team with the precision of a craftsman — cupping sessions, aroma testing, quality control with a spoon. Nothing left the roastery without his standard.
"We are not just serving coffee. We are setting a standard for what Ethiopian coffee can mean to the world."

CHAPTER FIVE · THE VISION
Beyond Africa. A Network for People.
Filimon's vision was never just a café. It was always a platform — for young entrepreneurs, for local artists, for the next generation of Ethiopian builders. Barista training programs, business workshops, financial literacy sessions. Former employees who became founders. Customers who became partners. Fili Coffee is the proof that one obsession, pursued with enough intention, becomes a movement that outlives the original cup.
"My dream is not a chain of coffee shops. My dream is a network of empowered people who carry Ethiopia's story with them — wherever they go in the world."
— Filimon Tesfaselasae, Founder of Fili Coffee
